A starship carrying a man from deep space lands near Ventura Air Force Base. Possessing the ability to change shape, the Starman takes the form of a butterfly and observes Jaime teaching her class. She notices that the butterfly seems to understand her, so she takes it to Rudy, who is working at the base on a nuclear power project. When Jaime and the butterfly are alone, it transforms into Starman. Sensing a deep cosmic connection, the pair start to fall in love. The next day, Starman asks Jaime to leave with him, because in less than six hours a chain of events, linked to Rudy's project, will cause the Earth to explode. Jaime tries to warn Oscar and Rudy of Earth's impending doom, but Rudy believes that she is disturbed and he sedates her. Believing that there is no hope for Earth's salvation, Starman kidnaps Jaime and they lift off into space toward his home planet.
